2021.10.15 22:14 finewhitelady Sneaker sizing

Hi all! I want to use my $30 off code on the rainbow sneakers, but I don't own any sneakers or Chelseas (which I've heard are sized similarly). I have very long narrow feet, and my 2nd and 3rd toes are both longer than my big toe, which makes lots of shoes fit poorly. I'm a street 11 and measure closer to 10.5, and between normal and narrow for width. I wear 11.5 in most Rothy's styles (loafers, squares, and probably flats...the one pair of flats I have is an 11 but a color that was known to run big) and 12 in points, but I have to wear an arch support insole in my points because 12 is roomy (11.5 is too tight though). Do you think I should buy the sneakers in 11 or 11.5? I've heard some people use their flats size and others their street size. I'm also not averse to doubling up the insole with an arch support to take more room, so I'm leaning toward 11.5. Thanks!

2021.10.15 22:14 FortCrypto The Ancient Israelites Were Henotheists - Not Monotheists!

Textual and archeological evidence indicates that the ancient Israelites were not monotheists for most of their existence, but were henotheists - meaning that they worshipped only one god but believed in the existence of other gods. In this thread, I will expound upon this evidence.
In English, there are what are known as collective nouns, which refer to multiple things that function collectively and are therefore paired with singular verbs - just as a singular noun would be paired with singular verbs. For example, the word "team" is a collective noun and takes singular verbs.
Example: >The Team paints murals.
Notice that it takes the form of the verb "paint" that a singular noun takes, even though it refers to more than one individual - rather than taking the form of the verb that an ordinary plural noun takes.

  1. Singular noun: John Example sentence: >John paints murals.
  2. Plural noun: People Example Sentence: >People paint murals.
Collective nouns exist in also Biblical Hebrew.
Von Siebenthal suggests that 'collectives' in Biblical Hebrew may be helpfully split into three sub-groups: 'group nouns' like עַ֚ם 'am 'people' or יִשְׂרָאֵֽל yisrael 'Israel' which refer to a plurality of real word entities"; 'generic nouns' like אַרְבֶּ֔ה arbe 'locust(s)' or sōn 'small cattle' which "basically refer to a class (genus) leaving the number of real world entities open"...
A noun like 'people' can be understood referring to a single entity, 'a people', such as 'the people of Israel'. It can also be understood to refer to the plurality of individuals that make up the 'people'. Thus, there is a tendency for collectives in biblical Hebrew to exhibit variability of grammatical agreement between singular and plural (-> Agreement; Number). This variability is especially characteristic of von Siebenthal's first category, 'group nouns' (von Siebenthal 2009:79). (Source).
I assert that an example of a collective noun is the Hebrew noun אֱלֹהִ֑ים 'elohim', which is typically translated to the singular English word "god"/ "God" even though it's grammatically plural.
This is done due to the theological presupposition that the Hebrew Scriptures of the Bible are monotheistic and that the plural construction of the word is suposedly a plural of majesty, which is meant to convey that the biblical god is one personage but is as powerful as many gods. In other words, this convention is due to religious belief rather than linguistic objectivity.
I therefore assert that when 'elohim' appears in the Hebrew Scriptures, it is referring to a collective of gods who function as a team; this is why it's used with the singular form of verbs - not because it is a plural of majesty. Hence, I assert that the very first verse of the Hebrew Scriptures describes a team of gods creating the heavens and the Earth even though singular forms of verbs are used.
Genesis 1:1. In the beginning gods [Hebrew: elohim] created the heavens and the earth.
This is further supported by Genesis 1:26.
And gods [Hebrew: elohim] said let us create man in our image, after our likeness...
The verb "yomer" ["said"] is singular but - as already stated - "elohim" a collective noun. I assert that this means that the group of gods who are present are deciding as a team or collective to create man in their image.
Some have argued that in this passage God is talking to angels. However, according to the Hebrew Scriptures, angels are 'elohim' - in other words, angels are gods. The word "angel" comes from the Greek word ἄγγελος 'aggelos,' which simply means "messenger"; the corresponding Hebrew word is מַלְאַ֨ךְ 'malakh,' which also means 'messenger.'
The beings who are referred to as 'malakh' in association with the divine are literally referred to as 'elohim' 'gods' in the Hebrew Scriptures.
For example, in Judges 13:1-22, a human couple are visited by a מַלְאַךְ־יְהֹוָ֖ה 'malakh Yahweh' messenge angel of Yahweh. After the angel dissappears in a supernatural fashion, the couple refer to it as 'elohim.'
Note that I have altered the translation below by changing "God" to "gods," since the corresponding word in the Hebrew text - 'elohim' - is plural, as already stated. I have also changed "the Lord" to "Yahweh," since the corresponding word in the Hebrew text is the Tetragrammaton, which scholars believe was originally pronounced as such.
Judges 13:20. And it was, when the flame went up from upon the altar toward heaven, and the angel of Yahweh ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on, and they fell on their faces to the ground. 21. And the angel of Yahweh did not continue to appear to Manoah and to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of Yahweh. 22. And Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen gods [Hebrew: elohim]. (Source).
So, as you can see, the angel is synonymized with 'elohim.' As for why he's referred to as 'elohim,' which is plural, even though he's only one being, I assert that's due to the very nature of a messenger.
A messenger represents the entity of which he is a member; for example, if an ambassador of the United States makes a declaration of foreign policy, news outlets would report, "The United States Government has made a declaration of foreign policy," even though only one member of the United States Government conveyed the message.
Likewise, if a UPS delivery person delivers a package to someone's residence, that someone would say, "UPS has delivered my package," even though only one membe employee of UPS did so.
Subsequently, even though the couple saw only one god, that god represented the collective of gods of which he is a member, which is why they said that they saw 'elohim.' Hence, angels are gods.
With this understanding in mind, let us return to Genesis 1:26.
And gods [Hebrew: elohim] said let us create man in our image, after our likeness...
Assuming that only the being who is speaking is a god and that the audience to whom he is speaking are not also gods is false. This is due to the following passage:
Genesis 1:27. And gods [Hebrew: elohim] created man in His image; in the image of gods [Hebrew: elohim] He created him; male and female He created them.
After humans are created, the passage says that they were created in "elohim's" image; this necessitates that the beings to whom the speaker in verse 26 speaks are also 'elohim,' since the speaker says "Let us create man in our image." In other words, "our" image is the image of both the speaker and the audience - indicating that both the speaker and audience are 'elohim.'
As for why the singular pronoun construction "his image" is used, I assert that it's the functioning of 'elohim' [which is masculine] as a collective noun as well as Biblical Hebrew's lack of gender-neutral pronouns. For example, in English one would use the singular pronoun "it" for collective nouns, as in "The government has changed its policy," rather than "The government has changed their policy."
Another example of a being other than Yahweh being referred to as 'elohim' is a man who wrestles with Jacob in Genesis 32:25-31. The man isn't referred to as a 'malakh' ("messenger"), but the context suggests that he is one.
Genesis 32:25. And Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until the break of dawn. (Source).
After wrestling the man, Jacob says the following. Note that I've changed "angel" to "gods" because the corresponding word that appears in the Hebrew text is 'elohim' - not 'malakh'; I've also changed "face" to "faces," because the corresponding word is in its plural form in the Hebrew text (פָּנִ֣ים panim, faces ).
31. And Jacob named the place Peniel, for [he said,] "I saw gods faces to faces, and my soul was saved."
So, we have another example of some sort of emissary of the divine being referred to as 'elohim.' Also, note that the word "Peniel," which Jacob names the place where he fought the mysterious man, means face of god (peni = face, el = god).
Here's yet another example of an angel being referred to as 'elohim.'
Exodus 3:2. An angel of Yahweh ( 'malakh Yahweh' ) appeared to him in a flame of fire from within the thorn bush, and behold, the thorn bush was burning with fire, but the thorn bush was not being consumed.
So, as we can see, the angel ("malakh") is in the buring bish. However, in verse 4, the text says that 'elohim' spoke from the burning bush, thus indicating that the angel is 'elohim.'
4. Yahweh saw that he had turned to see, and God ( 'elohim' ) called to him from within the thorn bush, and He said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am!"
Now, let's consider other passages that convey the henotheism of the Hebrew Scriptures.
Exodus 20:2. "I am Yahweh, your God, Who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3. You shall not have the gods of others in My presence. (Source).
This implies that the gods of others exist; otherwise, this commandment is nonsensical.
The prevailing interpretation of Jews and Christians is that it's referring to fake "gods," otherwise known as idols/ statues. This interpretation appears to be supported by the verses that immediately follow it:
4. You shall not make for yourself a graven image or any likeness which is in the heavens above, which is on the earth below, or which is in the water beneath the earth. 5. You shall neither prostrate yourself before them nor worship them, for I, Yahweh, your God, am a zealous God, Who visits the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons, upon the third and the fourth generation of those who hate Me...(Source).
However, I assert that verses 4 and 5 are wholly seperate commandments from verse 3, because creating and worshipping idols in general is prohibited - not only in regard to "the gods of others."
Hence, verse 3 concerns worship of foreign gods in any capacity, and verses 4 & 5 concern idolatry.
Furthermore, Judges 11:24 indicates that the ancient Israelites did indeed believe that the gods of other nations existed; it comprises part of a conversation between an Israelite and a Moabite.
Notice that the person speaking, the Israelite, describes the god of the Moabites - Chemosh - in the same way that he describes Yahweh: as providing the Moabites with land just as Yahweh was providing them with land.
Judges 11:23. And now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from before His people Israel, and you want to possess it? 24. Is it not that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess, that you may possess; and all that which Yahweh our God has driven out from before us, that we shall possess. (Source).
Yet even more evidence of henotheism is the ability of Pharaoh's magicians to replicate the miracles that Yahweh enables Moses and Aaron to perform. If Moses and Aaron's abilities to perform miracles are enabled by their god, Yahweh, then the magicians' ability to perform miracles must also be enabled by their god(s) (Source).
Exodus 7:9. "When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, 'Provide a sign for yourselves,' you shall say to Aaron, 'Take your staff, [and] cast [it] before Pharaoh; it will become a serpent.'" 10. [Thereupon,] Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and they did so, as the Lord had commanded; Aaron cast his staff before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. 11. [Then,] Pharaoh too summoned the wise men and the magicians, and the necromancers of Egypt also did likewise with their magic. 12. Each one of them cast down his staff, and they became serpents; but Aaron's staff swallowed their staffs. ... 19. Yahweh said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch forth your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, over their canals, over their ponds, and over all their bodies of water, and they will become blood, and there will be blood throughout the entire land of Egypt, even in wood and in stone.' 20. Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh had commanded, and he raised the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants, and all the water that was in the Nile turned to blood. ... 22. And the necromancers of Egypt did likewise with their secret rites, and Pharaoh's heart was steadfast, and he did not heed them, as Yahweh had spoken.
There are passages that indicate that the Israelites did not believe that Yahweh was all-powerful, such as the following:
Judges 1:19. And Yahweh was with Judah, and they drove out the inhabitants of the mountains; but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, for they had iron chariots. (Source).
Furthermore, there is archeological evidence - the Moabite Stele - that has revealed that the aforementioned Moabites thought of Yahweh as just one of many gods - including their god, Chemosh; the evidence also reveals that Chemosh defeated Yahweh, which is corroborated in the Hebrew Scriptures.
Source of the following passage.
Moabite Stele [1]. I am Mesha, the son of Chemosh-yatti, the king of Moab, from Dibon. My father was king over Moab for thirty years, and I was king after my father. ... [3]. Omri was the king of Israel, and he oppressed Moab for many days, for Chemosh was angry with his land. And his son succeeded him, and he said - he too - "I will oppress Moab!" In my days he did so, but I looked down on him and on his house, and Israel has gone to ruin, yes, it has gone to ruin for ever! ... [7]. And Chemosh said to me: "Go, take Nebo from Israel!" And I went in the night, and I fought against it from the break of dawn until noon, and I took it, and I killed its whole population, seven thousand male citizens and aliens, female citizens and aliens, and servant girls; for I had put it to the ban of Aštar Chemosh. AND FROM THERE, I TOOK THE VESSELS OF YAHWEH, AND I HAULED THEM BEFORE THE FACE OF CHEMOSH.
Here is the scholarly interpretation of Mesha's theft of Yahweh's vessels and Mesha's subsequent deliverance of them to his god, Chemosh. The source is the same as above.
Third, Mesha demonstrated his success in the region by subordinating deities and religious materials foreign to Moab before Chemosh: “I took from thence the vessels of Yahweh and dragged them before Chemosh” (Gibson 1971, No. 16, ln. 17-18). Rather than just defeat a nation through reclaiming their cities and killing inhabitants, Mesha confirmed his success by bringing Yahweh's religious items before Chemosh. In doing so, Mesha ritually subordinated Yahweh to Chemosh. Such an action illustrates how his attempt to establish political rule over ancient Israel was accomplished through means of subordinating the primary deity of ancient Israel to the primary deity of Moab.
Finally, this account is possibly corroborated by the following biblical passage (Source).
2nd Kings 3:4. Now Mesha the king of Moab was a sheepman; and he would repeatedly pay tribute to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and one hundred thousand rams with their wool. 5. And it was, that when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
The king of subsequently consults the prophet Elisha, who conveys a prophecy of success from Yahweh.
18. And this will be slight in the eyes of Yahweh, and He will deliver Moab into your hands.
Israel subsequently experiences a series of victorious battles against Moab - but Israel ultimately retreats from Moab after the King of Moab, Mesha, invokes his god, Chemosh, by sacrificing his own child.
26. And the king of Moab saw that the men of war were stronger than he and he took with him seven hundred men who drew their swords, to break a way to the king of Edom, yet they were unable.
27. And he took his first-born who would reign after him, and brought him up for a burnt-offering on the wall. And there was great wrath upon Israel, and they withdrew from him and returned to the land.
This, Israel ultimately loses to Moab due to Chemosh, the god of the Moabites, unleashing his great wrath upon Israel. This indicates that Chemosh overpowering Yahweh, since Yahweh was Israel's god.
